Calle del Forno, Venice 17

Calle del Forno is a disused bakery just off Via Giuseppe Garibaldi in Venice. Coinciding with the 2017 Art Biennial, it was home to an artist residency programme. The residency asked the artist to consider work, production and economy over a 6 day period and to consecutively add to the Labour Book, whilst producing new work. The resulting work explored the potential of the situation, taking its physical limitations as a starting point. It examined the products and materials at the base of the artist practice. The residency took place alongside curator Andrea Bortolotto and artist Monika Gravagno.

Ordinarily used as thinking tools and not in the production of final works, the pieces on show demonstrate a form of image processing, putting them on show as the subjects of the work. They are still lifes created using common office materials and a smartphone highlighting our reliance upon them in the routines of work and daily bureaucracy.

Making no effort to mask the signs of the work’s production, the process becomes part of the work. Playing with the process, each time understanding and allowing the limitations to come through in the outcome, to the point where the printer is totally drained of ink. The base ingredients of the installation become part of the conversation.
